GNSS Permanent Station

A GPS-receiver is operated in Zimmerwald since 1993. The data contribute to the global network of the IGS (International GNSS Service, GNSS stands for Global Navigation Satellite System). The equipment was replaced four times by more modern ones.

Since 1999 additionally the data are noted by GPS and GLONASS (the Russian counter part to GPS) satellites by a GNSS receiver. The data of both receivers are sent once per hour to the IGS data centers. Zimmerwald is one of the longest continuously operated stations in the IGS network. It has the status of a reference station, which is used for the definition of the global reference frame (ITRF) within the IGS.

Both receivers also contribute to the European Permanent Network (EPN).

For the national surveying of Switzerland the GNSS station in Zimmerwald is the most important reference station in the AGNES network.
