****************************************************************************** BSW Electronic Mail 10-Mar-2006 18:55:01 CET Message Number 0215 ****************************************************************************** Author: BSWteam Subject: Updating Bernese Version 5.0 Dear Bernese Users, As with all software, Bernese is not bug-free and updating your software is very important. Up to now, we have made the fixes available on a file-by-file basis, freely accessible from the support pages of the Bernese website at http://www.bernese.unibe.ch/support.html In order to render updating easier and more systematic we have decided to change the update procedure in the following way: Use of a script to update Bernese --------------------------------- On the support pages, there is an updater tool available to download to your X/EXE directory. To update your version you will have to run this tool from there. It will detect your version, perform some basic checks, and inform you on the update file available for your version. The tool will also recommend to run a panel update in case program input panels are affected by the update step. The update files are now in a protected directory. The necessary access information is given by the update tool. After downloading the update file, the tool will attempt to extract the files allowing you to choose the target directory. Select a temporary directory, in case you have made changes to the software, which you would like to keep. In this case, you will have to merge the updated files manually into your version. Lists of identified problems and improvements are still openly available on the support pages, but no corrections are given there. One update file for each Bernese release ---------------------------------------- For each release of Bernese V5.0, there is one update file available containing all corrections applicable for this release. You will no longer have to implement fixes file by file. This makes it also easy for you to bring your original release to the most current state by updating from release to release until you reach the current level. The Help->About box is also updated with each update step, and a file containing the names of all affected files is stored in your X/DOC directory. Note that the update files only contain source code, not executables. After installing an update, compiling the software (including the menu) using the configure.pm tool items (3) and (4) will be necessary on Unix/Linux. For windows users without a compiler, a set of updated executables (small medium and large) is available for the latest release, only. Please note however, that you should nevertheless install all intermediate source code updates, in order to keep the program code and executables consistent. Be aware that the update utility is not designed to detect whether or not you skipped an update step. It is in your responsiblity to apply all bug fixe patches available. Be referred to more details on http://www.bernese.unibe.ch/support.html regarding this new update procedure. We hope that these modifications will make it easier for you to keep your Bernese version up-to-date. If you find any problems or have suggestions regarding this procedure don't hesitate to contact us per email to pierre.fridez@aiub.unibe.ch or bernese@aiub.unibe.ch Kind regards, BSWteam -- [Mailed from: Pierre Fridez ]
